The City of Pontiac is governed by a mayor and a ten-member City Council. Two aldermen are elected to four-year terms from each of five wards. The City Council meets the first and third Mondays each month. If that Monday falls on a holiday, then the meeting is Tuesday.

Daily operations, budgeting, and planning are handled by an appointed City Administrator.  Support staff members handle accounts payable, administrative assistance, and utility billing.
