Changes in Pontiac

  • Construction work has begun on two major projects in the City of Pontiac.  The new Amtrak Depot is currently at the beginning stages of construction, as is the new hotel to be added to the west side of town.
  • The City of Pontiac welcomed a number of new businesses to our community in 2015.  We sincerely hope success and prosperity will be in the future for Advance Auto Parts, Dunkin Donuts, the Route 66 Kite Store, the Route 66 Sugar Shack, and the Eagle Performing Arts and Conference Center.  Welcome to you all!
  • Pontiac City Council recently approved the building of a new hotel on the West side of the city.  Working with Hotel Development Service, the city anticipates the new hotel will be open by the middle of 2017. Ground breaking for the new hotel took place in December of 2015.  Construction will be in full swing in the spring of 2016.
  • The Pontiac Museum Complex has added three new exhibits.  The Music of the Civil War exhibit is a temporary presentation featuring original sheet music and other artifacts from the antebellum and American Civil War periods.  The Bob Waldmire Experience highlights the art and lifestyle of Route 66 icon, Bob Waldmire.  The Walldog Mural and Sign Art Museum has reopened in the Museum Complex.
  • The Crescent Motion Picture Theater in Pontiac, with the assistance of the City of Pontiac, has moved from the older film technology to a new digital projection system.  The new system will allow for greater diversity in the offerings shown at the theater.
  • The City of Pontiac has nearly completed the creation of the Eagle Performing Arts and Conference Center, a project that included the renovation of the 1930's era Eagle Motion Picture House.  The new facility has a full lighting and sound system and can be used for events other than live theater performances.  The first production for the Eagle was a dinner theater show presented by the Vermillion Players group in December, 2015.
  • The Creative Nook, a new store in downtown Pontiac has opened just in time for the 2014 tourism season.  The store offers craft supplies, Route 66 souvenirs, and hand-crafted jewelry.  There is a coffee bar in the rear of the store as well.
  • Octane 66, a classic car dealership, has recently opened in Pontiac at 829 North Ladd Street.  Along with antique and collectible vehicles, there are lots of great pieces of memorabilia.
  • A new restaurant, Edinger's Filling Station, recently (2014) opened next to the Dongbai International Art School on Madison Street.
  • Pontiac's Main Street organization, P.R.O.U.D. opened a new retail store in downtown Pontiac in May, 2012.  The Proud of Illinois Marketplace features products made in Illinois or that relate to Illinois' history, attractions, or sites.
  • The Dongbai International Airbrush Art School opened in April of 2012 and has already graduated several classes of art students.
  • The design for the new Amtrak High Speed Rail depot in Pontiac was presented to the Pontiac City Council by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
  • The Pontiac Office of Tourism recently announced that the city set another record for the increase in national and international visitors in 2013.
  • Work on Phase 1 of additional parking and green space in Block 59 in the center of the downtown area is now completed. The design for the park was accepted as part of a collaborative coalition with students, faculty, and staff at the University of Illinois at Champaign / Urbana.
